Why Telford needs more foster carers

There are local children in desperate need of foster carers in the Telford and Wrekin area. When there are not enough foster families nearby, children can be placed further away from their school, friends, routines and support networks.

By becoming a foster carer in the Telford Wrekin area, you could help a child stay closer to what matters most to them. That might mean staying near school, keeping friendships, maintaining family connections where appropriate, and feeling more settled in familiar surroundings.

If you live in Telford, Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley, Donnington, Ketley, Hadley, Priorslee, Newport or nearby, you could make a real difference in your local community.
“We are seeing a growing need for foster carers in areas like Telford. Keeping children close to their communities makes a real difference to their stability and wellbeing. At New Chapters, we focus on making sure our foster carers feel supported from the very start, with the training, guidance and day-to-day support they need to feel confident in the role.”

Can I become a foster carer in Telford?

Many people assume they are not suitable, but foster carers come from all walks of life.

You may be able to foster if you:

  • Have a spare bedroom
  • Are patient, caring and reliable
  • Have time to support a child
  • Are willing to learn and grow into the role

You can be single, married, working or not working. What matters most is your ability to provide a safe and stable home.

If you are wondering how fostering could fit around your job or daily life, we explain this in more detail here.

Full training from the start

It is completely normal to feel unsure at the beginning. Most people do.

You are not expected to have all the answers. We provide structured training during the assessment process and continue to support you as you develop your skills.

Our approach is practical, personal and focused on helping you feel confident. When you feel supported, children benefit too.

You can find out more about how we prepare and support carers on our support and training page.

Foster carer pay, allowances and benefits

Fostering needs to work for your household as well as for the child in your care.

As a foster carer with New Chapters, you will receive around £2,000 per child per month and upwards, dependent on age and particular needs. There are tax benfits to being a foster carer too.

Payments are made monthly from the day a child moves in, helping you focus on providing the care and stability they need.

For a full breakdown of foster carer pay and allowances, take a look at our dedicated pay and allowances page.

What does a foster carer do?

Fostering is about providing a safe, stable and supportive home for a child who cannot live with their family.

Day-to-day, this may include:

  • School runs and routines
  • Providing meals and structure
  • Supporting education and development
  • Attending meetings and appointments
  • Offering emotional support and reassurance

You will always be part of a wider team, with guidance and support around you.
